The Place Where it Happened: UCSF and the HIV/AIDS Crisis

In the early 80s, a new disease appeared in San Francisco, baffling scientists and alarming the public. Since then, our understanding of HIV/AIDS has made enormous strides, with treatments and prevention making leaps and bounds too. However, these advances haven't reached everyone yet. In a live recording, we spoke to five people who have been instrumental in shaping HIV/AIDS treatment, policy, and care in San Francisco and abroad, and asked them about the barriers that still remain today.

This unique episode of Carry the One Radio, created for the UCSF Alumni Relations office, was recorded in front of a live audience as the kick-off event of UCSF Alumni Weekend 2019. I worked with a team of five other CTOR members, a videographer, an archivist, and others to shape this story, centered around conversations with a small handful of the clinicians, researchers, and community members who are shaping San Francisco’s response to HIV at home and abroad.
